Grand Theft Auto VI is now less than three weeks away. Rockstar lists a launch date of 19 November 2026, after two delays, and the countdown has well and truly started. This is a short, plain-English guide to what is confirmed, what is still unknown, and how it compares with the last game in the series.
Quick facts
- Pre-orders: they opened in late June 2026, and digital pre-orders can pre-load from 12 November so the game is ready the moment it unlocks.
- Trailers: an Extended Look arrived on 27 August, followed by a launch trailer on 15 October.
- Not on last-generation consoles: it is aimed at current hardware only.
How we got here
The game was first pointed at a 2025 window. It was then moved to 26 May 2026, and later moved again to the current November date, with Rockstar saying it wanted extra time to polish the game. Since then, the studio and its parent company Take-Two have repeated the November date in trailers and investor updates, so it looks firmly locked in.

The countdown at a glance
The setting and the characters
The game is set in the fictional state of Leonida, a sun-soaked take on Florida, and it brings back a reimagined Vice City as its centrepiece. The story follows two leads, Lucia and Jason, and the artwork leans heavily into neon sunsets, beaches, boats, flashy cars and swamp wildlife.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5
The two games are separated by more than thirteen years, because GTA 5 launched in September 2013. Here are the differences that matter most:
- Location: GTA 5 was Los Santos and rural Blaine County. GTA 6 spreads across a whole state, with Vice City at its heart.
- Protagonists: GTA 5 let you switch between three characters. GTA 6 follows a pair, Lucia and Jason.
- Hardware: GTA 5 started on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. GTA 6 is built for current consoles, so you should expect denser crowds, better lighting and more detail.
- Tone: the new trailers lean into social-media-era chaos and a couple-on-the-run story, which feels different from GTA 5's heist-crew structure.
What is still unknown
- PC: there is no announced date, and rumours are only rumours.
- Online mode: details are still thin, and it is likely to matter a lot to long-term players.
- Reviews: nobody outside the studio has judged how the finished game plays yet, so treat all hype as hype until launch.
My take
As someone who builds small browser games, the thing I find most striking is the scale of the promise. A huge open world has to feel good minute to minute, and also hold together as a story. I will wait for real reviews before saying more.
Want a quick break while you wait?
Try a bite-sized arcade game in the meantime: Brick Breaker 3D is a good five-minute fix.
